On a recent sunny morning, a group of Neighbours Connect Southmead participants embarked on a journey through time! Accompanied by some of our lovely and dedicated volunteers, we paid a trip to the SS Great Britain – the world’s first large iron ship – moored proudly in Bristol Harbour.
Our first stop was exploring the museum in the original dockyard. We learned about the ship’s history, and donned top hats and bonnets to pose as passengers for a fun group photo.
Then we explored the ship, checking out the top deck and below deck areas. It was fascinating to see the kitchen and where people slept. We also saw the propeller-driven engine in action. To finish off we all headed to the busy café for a bit of lunch and a chat about our findings.
The weather was mostly sunny, but a hailstorm surprised us at the end. And we had to make a hurried dash from the café to get the bus home! Overall, it was a great day full of adventure!
Neighbours Connect Southmead is about bringing people together, and supporting those that may be socially isolated to feel more of a part of the Southmead community.
Jane, a new volunteer said, “it was really good to meet other volunteers and participants, and to connect while doing something interesting and having a laugh!”. Kathleen, one of our participants said, “Neighbours Connect gives me a chance to get out without being dependent on my daughter. It was nice to go out with the others and experience something new. We all enjoyed the dressing up!”
