I’d been having a few conversations with various people regarding the cost-of-living crisis. I heard from many that the choice was “heating or eating”, having to choose between heating their houses or feeding themselves and their family.
I contacted Sarah and Claire from Travelling Kitchen and we put a plan together to do a ‘Community Cook Up’. We’d get people together to prepare, cook and eat a meal. Not only does this make cost effective meals, enough to take home and freeze, but crucially it also gets some isolated people together. After the pandemic, when many were alone, this is really important.
We met once a month and had a couple of volunteers to help set up and support people through the session.
Six months later the project is finished, and time has flown by. There were lots of new friendships made. We were a little sad that we’d come to our last session but also buzzing with excitement, and hopeful for the group to continue.
Sarah and Claire are fantastic hosts as people are so at ease around them. There is lots of advice and tips on cooking, chopping technique, and eating.
There were bouts of silence, where people were concentrating, followed by bursts of laughter. A perfect balance.
Overall, the feedback that I received was very positive. People have enjoyed getting together and learning new skills, eating lovely healthy food, and making new friends. We are hoping to run the group again so keep an eye out for the venue, times and dates!
