Kids’ Ideas Brought to Life: Upgraded Embleton Road Play Area is Now Open

We are thrilled to announce that Embleton Road Play Area reopened just in time for the summer holidays after being refurbished and having new play equipment installed. Among the exciting improvements are a large spiral climber, an accessible roundabout, slides, and plenty of swings. Families will also appreciate the new seating, fencing, safety gates, and a safe colourful floor surface.

Pupils from Little Mead Primary Academy played an important part in the design of the new play area, working with play manufacturer Wicksteed Leisure, and Bristol City Council at creative sessions in school. Their ideas and input on the design and equipment were brilliant!

Pupils attended the official opening, along with local Ward Councillors Kye Dudd and Kaz Self, staff from Bristol City Council, and Wicksteed Leisure Ltd.

Councillor Stephen Williams, Chair of the Public Health and Communities Committee, said: “It is wonderful to see this playground upgraded and reopened.  It looks really fantastic and will provide a safe environment for children to grow and develop through play. I thank the children and staff of Little Mead Primary Academy for their involvement in the design of the play area. It’s great to see your creative ideas come to life!”

Pat Scott, Pastoral Lead at the school said: “This has been an amazing project to be involved in. From a workshop to design the park in a very cold January, to seeing the design put together has been fantastic. All our children have been so excited to watch the build. I am very proud to be part of this. I have been working at the school over 30 years and it is brilliant to see this fantastic park built for our young people – bit of a legacy for me as I get closer to retirement.”

Members of Little Mead Primary Academy’s Eco-club will be helping to sow wildflowers in planting areas around the site over the coming months.

Local Councillor for Southmead Ward Kaz Self said; “It was a pleasure to attend the opening of this wonderful refurbished play area. Co-designed with local school children, it’s a vast improvement on what was there before.”

The refurbishment and redesign is funded by Homes England’s Homes Infrastructure Funding, which is helping to deliver over 200 new homes in Southmead. The redesign of the play area will also allow new council housing to be built on the nearby White Hall site, while maintaining a high-quality play space for local families.
