This season has been an outstanding one for Southmead RFC with the first team clinching promotion in the last league game of the season, and the second team winning the league with a few weeks to spare. This great league campaign was finished off by winning the Bristol Combination Bowl final in another nail-biter at Lockleaze Sports Centre.
The Club is absolutely buzzing at the moment and with back-to-back promotions for the first team we have no plans on stopping here. We have a great amount of young talent with over 12 players aged 21 or under. Two of which – Fin Caswell and Toby Popple – have really excelled and also represented Bristol Combination and Gloucester County respectively.
This has been one special season with passionate leadership from one of our old guard, Archie Woodland, who’s been at the Club now for nearly 25 years, and Dan Allen, who has been excellent on and off the field for the second XV. Simon Knight and his team of coaches have done an outstanding job as they continued to improve week on week.
We were devastated that Geoff Williams, our one and only president, died at the end of last year after putting in over 35 years of work. He helped the Club in its early stages, continuously raised funds, was at the forefront of our success, and so proud of everything SRFC. He will be missed by so many who knew him through his work for the community. As well as our Chair, he was our well-known Police Constable patrolling the streets back in the day, and a Trustee for the Southmead Development Trust. His love for Southmead was plain to see and he was loved by everyone. We dedicate this brilliant season to Geoff and his family.
