I’ve been helping to run the Single Parents Fair now for over 10 years and it’s a highlight of the year because single parents tell us that it’s a gift for them. We understand that there’s something about bringing up children single handedly that can be challenging and even overwhelming at times, and I love that The Community Church recognises that and does something wonderful.
I see situations where family is thin on the ground and finances are tight and there’s real need, and so this day of love and support means a lot to those who come. We try to think about what would be particularly supportive like providing professional level portrait photos because when there is only one parent who takes the photo of you and the kids? Or how is it possible to have the time for a haircut or a hand massage ? Or how about a moment to have a cuppa and some homemade cake? Or where’s the money for some clothes or a few extra toys for Christmas?
This day of love does all these things and more – advice stalls from agencies and charities, craft rooms and inflatables for children, popcorn, even a special Christmas room where children can choose a little gift for their parent for Christmas! Last year it was amazing to see the joy in parents faces knowing their child had picked and wrapped a gift just for them.
I’m delighted and often humbled to work with the most amazing army of volunteers who work hard to say to one parent families: we not only see you, but we think you’re doing the most amazing job!
Lastly, in case you’re wondering about how all this happens, the whole church gets involved with all shapes of family and we love it If you’re parenting on your own, you’re invited and it’s totally free.
